What If Friends Took Place in Egypt? AI Gives the Sitcom a Brilliant Egyptian Makeover

Ten years ago in Cairo, a bold idea took shape &mdash; to revive a long-forgotten cornerstone of Egyptian pop culture: the musical monologue. The result was Bahgaga, an all-female troupe that reimagines this vintage art form through a vibrant mix of song, theatrical performance and sharp satire, all delivered with a distinctly Egyptian twist. Among the group&rsquo;s earliest voices was actress Asmaa Abouelyazid, who once performed with Bahgaga and continues to hold them close to her heart. While her career has since soared on screen, Abouelyazid often credits the troupe as one of her most formative artistic experiences &mdash; a space where sisterhood, creativity and fearless expression came together in harmony. Nile FM had a deeper look into Bahgaga to trace their journey &mdash; and how they&rsquo;ve managed to put the musical monologue back where it belongs: centre stage.
How It All Began Founded in 2015 by music director and composer Ayman Helmy, Bahgaga quickly carved out a space in Egypt&rsquo;s alternative music scene.
&ldquo;Bahgaga was my way out of depression,&rdquo; Helmy recalls. &ldquo;I wanted to create something that could help deal with sadness &mdash; not just for me, but for the audience too. I&rsquo;ve always loved dramatic songs and old monologues, where comedy and pain coexist. They offer something truly different.&rdquo;
The group&rsquo;s name &mdash; Bahgaga, meaning &ldquo;delight&rdquo; or &ldquo;cheerfulness&rdquo; &mdash; captures that intention. As founding member Samar Galal puts it:
&ldquo;We chose the name because it fits the energy of the group. The goal is to revive the monologue in a way that simply makes people happy.&rdquo;
A Stage for Women, by Women Traditionally, the monologue genre was dominated by male performers like Ismail Yassine and Shokoko. But from the beginning, Helmy envisioned something different.
&ldquo;There were very few women in comedic singing. Back in the day, it was mainly Thurayya Helmy or Soad Mekkawy. Men ran the show. I was determined to change that.&rdquo;
For actress Raghda Galal, the group was a perfect hybrid of theatre and music:
&ldquo;Our first concert was at Rawabet Theater in September 2015, and the energy was unreal. We combined acting and singing &mdash; the essence of the monologue. It lets you deliver emotion, satire, and message in one performance. With modern sounds, it still resonates.&rdquo;
Finding a New Voice Through contemporary arrangements and a dynamic stage presence, Bahgaga has reimagined monologue art for a younger generation. For classically trained singer Nadine Amer, joining the group was transformational:
&ldquo;I used to sing traditional Arabic music at the Opera House. Bahgaga changed everything. I moved from rigid, classical singing to something alive &mdash; something theatrical. It empowered me and helped me rediscover myself.&rdquo;
Reimagining a Cultural Legacy To Bahgaga, the monologue is more than entertainment &mdash; it&rsquo;s cultural preservation.
&ldquo;It was part of our artistic heritage,&rdquo; says Nadine. &ldquo;It started in the early 20th century as satire and social commentary. But over time, it disappeared. Bahgaga aims to bring it back &mdash; not as nostalgia, but with relevance.&rdquo;
Helmy reworks classics with contemporary twists, blending pop, jazz, or even Western genres to keep things fresh and relatable.
&ldquo;A lot of young people don&rsquo;t know the old legends,&rdquo; Nadine continues. &ldquo;So we try to repackage heritage in a way that clicks &mdash; using fun, catchy music that still has depth.&rdquo;

Even when performing a shared theme, each artist brings her own interpretation.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no repetition,&rdquo; Nadine adds. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s what Ayman wanted: diversity, not uniformity.&rdquo;
Ten Years On and Still Going Strong As Bahgaga marks its tenth anniversary, their mission remains the same: to make audiences laugh, think and feel &mdash; while preserving a lost piece of Egypt&rsquo;s musical identity.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s something magical about performing live,&rdquo; says Raghda. &ldquo;Seeing people laugh, connect, sing along &mdash; that&rsquo;s where I found myself. That&rsquo;s where I found my voice.&rdquo;

1.You have had a long-standing relationship with France, from studying at the University of Lyon to working with UNESCO and later at the CNRS-Sorbonne University, in addition to being previously honoured by President Sarkozy. What does it mean to you, on the professional level, to receive the prestigious Legion of Honour?
Allow me first to explain to your distinguished audience the significance and nature of this prestigious award. The L&eacute;gion d&rsquo;Honneur is the highest distinction bestowed by the French Republic, recognizing exceptional civil or military achievements. It was originally established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801 and has since become a symbol of France&rsquo;s enduring appreciation for excellence and service to humanity. For me, receiving the L&eacute;gion d&rsquo;Honneur is a deeply meaningful recognition, not only of my personal journey but of the decades-long dedication I have committed to the fields of archaeology, cultural heritage management, public diplomacy, and academic research. As stated in the official presidential decree, this honour acknowledges over 30 years of work and contribution. My connection with France runs deep. Between 1995 and 2000, I pursued my doctoral studies at the University of Lyon, where I earned a PhD in Egyptology, specializing in Ancient Egyptian Civilization.
In 2004, I began facilitating the liaison between the Egyptian government, through the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and UNESCO&rsquo;s World Heritage Centre, strengthening international cooperation in cultural preservation. In 2008, I had the privilege of accompanying President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni during their cultural visit to Egypt, an important moment that further reflected the deep cultural ties between Egypt and France. The following year, in 2009, I was honoured with the Ordre National du M&eacute;rite, another significant French distinction. 2.The Legion of Honour is a historic distinction founded by Napoleon. How did you feel when you first learned about your?
It was truly a &ldquo;WOW&rdquo; moment! One of those rare times when emotion takes over completely. I was overwhelmed with a powerful mix of pride, gratitude, and humility. To receive such a historic and prestigious distinction left me deeply honored and reflective. I felt immense appreciation for everyone who believed in me and supported my journey over the years. This recognition came at a particularly meaningful point in my career, a stage where such an honor not only affirms the path I&rsquo;ve taken, but also inspires me to continue moving forward with renewed energy and purpose. It serves as a humbling reminder that the work we do can extend far beyond our immediate environment. It has strengthened my commitment and motivated me to keep striving, giving back, and contributing with even greater intention, not only through official roles, but also through lasting, meaningful impact.

3-The ceremony will take place at the iconic "Palais de la L&eacute;gion d&rsquo;Honneur" in Paris. How are you preparing for such a significant moment?
The exact date hasn&rsquo;t been set yet, likely toward the end of the year, so I have a bit of time to reflect and prepare. It&rsquo;s not just about writing a speech; it&rsquo;s about finding the right words to express what this honor truly means to me, and to acknowledge all the people and experiences that have shaped my journey. I&rsquo;m also taking this time to mentally and emotionally prepare for what I know will be a very meaningful and moving moment. Standing in such a historic place, receiving such a distinction, is something I want to be fully present for, to honor the legacy it represents, and the values it upholds.
4. How do you view the role of cultural diplomacy as a vital component of Egypt&rsquo;s soft power?
Absolutely, I strongly believe that Cultural diplomacy is a key pillar of Egypt&rsquo;s national and international strategies. Let me tell you that it has been the cornerstone of my professional journey, particularly during my ten years work at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, where I was responsible for liaising with international organizations and following up on the implementation of cultural conventions in Egypt, as well as overseeing efforts to restitute cultural artifacts lost through illicit channels. My second major experience in this field was in Rome, from 2012 to 2019, which became a demonstration of the power of Egypt&rsquo;s soft power during political crisis. Despite the complex political and social challenges of that period, the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome managed to amplify Egypt&rsquo;s cultural voice, deepen dialogue, and reinforce Egypt&rsquo;s presence through cultural engagement.
In 2022, I dedicated an Arabic monography to this topic, published by Dar El Maaref, where I highlighted the concept of cultural diplomacy in the Middle East and reflected on my seven years&rsquo; experience in Rome during a difficult political time in the Arab region. The book also sheds light on Egypt&rsquo;s historical leadership in cultural cooperation, especially the Nubian Campaign, jointly launched by the Egyptian and Sudanese governments under the umbrella of UNESCO. This groundbreaking initiative, the first international appeal to save cultural heritage, laid the foundation for what we now recognize as international cultural cooperation.
Egypt was a pioneer in rallying the global community to preserve iconic sites like Abu Simbel and the Island of Philae, a remarkable example of cultural solidarity. While the Egyptian government has made significant strides in advancing cultural diplomacy, there remains great potential to do more. Culture is not only about heritage; it is a strategic instrument of soft/smart power.
5- What does receiving this honour mean to you personally, especially having it presented by the President of France?
It is truly an incredible honour to receive the L&eacute;gion d&rsquo;honneur, especially from a country like France, long regarded as a global beacon of modernity, culture, art, and literature. As the great Taha Hussein once said, France is the &ldquo;land of light and angels&rdquo; (Balad el Nour wa el Mala&rsquo;eka), and to be recognized by such a nation is deeply meaningful.
I feel proud and grateful for this recognition, which celebrates values I hold dear, particularly the appreciation of human dignity and cultural depth. Moreover, France is also the country where I pursued my education and where I shaped much of my intellectual and professional journey, which makes this honour all the more significant.The official ceremony for receiving this distinction is expected to take place by the end of Autumn 2025. Let me also share that I had the opportunity to meet President Emmanuel Macron during his Visite d&rsquo;&Eacute;tat last April, a moment that added further meaning to this exceptional recognition.&nbsp;

By embracing this understanding, we create the foundation for meaningful dialogue and mutual enrichment. Only through such openness can we continue to learn from one another, not in spite of our differences, but because of them. Diversity is not a barrier, it is a bridge that connects us, expands our perspectives, and deepens our shared humanity.

As investigations continue into the massive fire that broke out at the Ramses Central building &mdash; a key facility operated by Telecom Egypt &mdash; stories of bravery and humanity have begun to emerge from the scene.
Among them is Hassan Mohamed, a young Egyptian man who happened to be passing by when the fire erupted. He had just left the Tawfikia area when he spotted the blaze and witnessed the overwhelming efforts of emergency responders. Moved by the scene &mdash; especially seeing firefighters working nonstop without even time to hydrate &mdash; Hassan rushed to bring them bottles of water, offering a simple yet powerful gesture of solidarity in a moment of crisis.
Nile FM spoke with Hassan to uncover what he witnessed &mdash; and what pushed him to help when it mattered most.
Q: Can you tell us where you were when the fire broke out?
I was on my way back from &ldquo;Tawfikia&rdquo; when I saw the fire and all the chaos around Ramses Central. It hit me immediately. The scene was heartbreaking &mdash; firefighters were struggling, pushing themselves to the limit, barely able to pause for a sip of water. They were doing everything they could. The ambulance crews, the police &mdash; no one was slacking. Everyone was doing their part.
Q: What made you decide to jump in and help?
Honestly, it was seeing how exhausted they were. I saw officers, firefighters and soldiers pointing at each other, trying to offer water or help while still saving lives. That&rsquo;s when I knew I had to do something, no matter how small. Even giving out water felt like the least I could offer. If they&rsquo;re risking everything to protect us, we have to support them. We all share this responsibility.

Q: How would you describe the efforts on the ground?
Unbelievable. I saw heroes that day. From the lowest-ranking conscript to the highest-ranking officer &mdash; no one stood still. They were fighting the fire, helping the injured, organizing the crowds&hellip; No one held back. Everyone wanted to help. We all knew that in moments like these, we have to stand together and protect our country.
Q: Any message you want to share with the public?
Yes &mdash; don&rsquo;t ever underestimate your role, even in the smallest act. We&rsquo;re all responsible. What I did was nothing compared to what those firefighters and officers did, but I believe every drop counts. This is our country. We must rise to protect it whenever it calls us.
Final Note: The Fire&rsquo;s Broader Impact
According to the Public Prosecution, the fire broke out in the main Ramses Central building &mdash; an 11-story structure &mdash; and an adjacent 6-story building used for international communications. So far, the incident has left four dead and 21 injured. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and evaluate safety and fire protection compliance at the site.
The Public Prosecution has pledged to revisit the site once firefighting and cooling operations are completed.

From chasing football dreams in the UK to navigating the sweet chaos of Cairo &mdash; content creator Ishaq sat down with Rob and Nadine on The Big Breakfast Show for an exclusive interview that covered it all: the culture shocks, the viral videos, and how Egypt has completely flipped his life upside down &mdash; in the best way possible.

&ldquo;I was a nobody a few months ago,&rdquo; Ishaq said candidly. &ldquo;Now I walk the streets of Cairo and people recognize me &mdash; it&rsquo;s honestly hard to describe. I feel like a mini celebrity.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
But before the millions of views and luxury car rides, Ishaq&rsquo;s journey started on the pitch. He was training with professional coaches in the UK, pursuing a career in football. That all changed when an unexpected injury forced him to stop. What followed was a period of depression, warehouse jobs, and eventually &mdash; a camera, a backpack, and a solo ticket out of the UK.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I wanted to travel solo because no one wanted to come with me,&rdquo; he laughed. That leap of faith took him first to Sharm El-Sheikh. &ldquo;It was nice&hellip; but I was craving more than just beaches.&rdquo; So he flew back &mdash; this time to Cairo &mdash; and something shifted. &ldquo;It just absolutely broke everything I knew. In Western cultures, we&rsquo;re so uptight. You have to do things a certain way. Cairo was different. It was chaos, but the good kind.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
His love for Egypt grew fast &mdash; and loud. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s Old Cairo for the history, New Cairo for your day to day,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;And when I first came, I just thought, I&rsquo;m having so much fun&hellip; I have to come back.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
And he did &mdash; twice more.
&nbsp;
By his second visit, Ishaq&rsquo;s content had taken off. &ldquo;I started posting silly little videos and Egyptians were all over the comments &mdash; &lsquo;do this, try that&rsquo; &mdash; I was constantly busy 24/7,&rdquo; he laughed. Talking about Egyptians, Ishaq mentioned "For me literally being in Egypt I make a post about anything&mdash;I mean, I remember one time I posted about a specific place to do a gym video and I had literally two or three hundred messages about that one thing,&nbsp;it's&nbsp;insane!"
&nbsp;
When asked how it all began, Ishaq didn&rsquo;t sugarcoat it. &ldquo;I got injured, fell into depression&hellip; I was working security, warehouse shifts,&rdquo; he shared openly. &ldquo;One day I just thought&mdash;let me take a risk. I started recording, got out of the country&hellip; and here I am.&rdquo; That leap of faith turned into a loyal fanbase of nearly 150,000 followers from across the globe &mdash; and counting.
&nbsp;
Over the past two months alone, his TikTok posts have racked up more than 20 million views, 4.6 million likes and over 150,000 followers. But for Ishaq, it&rsquo;s not just about numbers&mdash;It&rsquo;s about the experience.
&nbsp;
Now, he&rsquo;s diving into long-form vlogs &mdash; covering MMA fights, luxury cars and unexpected local gems. But the travel bug is far from done with him.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve only seen five percent of the North Coast,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m saving Alexandria, Luxor and Aswan for next. Thailand is coming up, then Japan. I want to go to places people aren&rsquo;t willing to go. Do things people aren&rsquo;t willing to do.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
And it&rsquo;s not just about the content &mdash; it&rsquo;s about the mindset. &ldquo;I want to transform people&rsquo;s stigma of countries,&rdquo; he told The Big Breakfast Show.

As for Egypt?
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Egypt is a dessert with many different layers,&rdquo; he continued &ldquo;you eat one slice and you just want more and more and more, and the next thing you know you get too big,&rdquo; he jokingly said. &ldquo;There's so much to eat you can digest so much content, I love the country honestly&mdash;it&rsquo;s amazing!&rdquo;

And when asked for his top three things that he loves about Egypt, unhesitant he replied:

&ldquo;The freedom. The people &mdash; even strangers treat you like a friend. And it&rsquo;s safe. Like, way safer than the UK. That genuinely surprised me.&rdquo;

So what's next? &ldquo;The vlogs are going to go crazy,&rdquo; he said.

From &ldquo;Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely&rdquo; to &ldquo;It&rsquo;s Gonna Be Me,&rdquo; fans have long fantasized about a collaboration between the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. Now, that fantasy may be closer to reality than ever.
The Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter revealed in a recent interview with &lsquo;Parade&rsquo; that a future collaboration between his music group and NSYNC &nbsp;is on the table.
&nbsp;&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve talked about it a ton, actually,&rdquo; Carter said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had those conversations internally with managers. It just hasn&rsquo;t lined up yet.&rdquo;
